Olympics Highlights: The U.S. Took an Early Lead in the Medal Count

More than 80 medals were handed out in the opening weekend of the Olympics, and Team USA won 12 of those.

Seven came in swimming, including a gold for Torri Huske in the Women’s 100-Meter Butterfly.  And the men’s team took gold in the 100-Meter Freestyle Relay.  American fencer Lee Kiefer also won gold in Women’s Foil.  So, that’s three early golds.

The U.S. also snagged six silvers in swimming, diving, fencing, and mountain biking . . . the Men’s Basketball team crushed Serbia 110 to 84 . . . U.S. surfers dominated the opening round . . . and the Women’s Gymnastics team cruised through their qualifier.  Simone Biles tweaked her calf but still competed.

Paris is six hours ahead of the East Coast, so a lot of events are happening in the early morning this time.
