Is It Okay to Lie to Your Friends About What Time an Event Starts?

Most people would agree lying to your friends should be avoided.  But is this one type of lie acceptable?

A woman’s TikTok is going viral after her friends made a dinner reservation and told her it was for 8:00 P.M. . . . when it was actually for 8:30.

In other words, they knew she’d be late because she’s ALWAYS late.  And it turned out they were right.  She showed up at 8:22, and the hostess said she was the first to arrive.

So from an ethics standpoint, is that okay to do?  One expert weighed in and said it’s best to avoid lying.  But confronting a friend can also backfire and make you seem controlling.  So maybe lying and tricking them could work by SHAMING them into being on time.

Either way, people online seem less concerned about the ethics, and more focused on how rude it is to be chronically late.  One person’s warning to her was this:  “The next step is ‘forgetting’ to invite you.”
